Wooden Pickets

Treated Pine Pickets are the most common timber used for picket fences; the characteristic low height federation look adorns many domestic and commercial properties around the state.

Wooden pickets are vertical boards with a plain or profiled tops that are evenly spaced and attached together with horizontal rails. The most common types of profiles are the Windsor and Gothic profiles however there has been a resurgence towards the pointed and flat tops. It is highly recommended that pickets are painted prior to installation and definitely screwed to the rails, regular painting will keep your fence looking good for years to come.

Posts

Treated Pine is once again the preferred timber used in picket fences. For stability and strength posts are sunk into the ground generally to a depth of 400 to 500 mm. Due to the direct ground contact timber posts need to be treated to Hazard level H4, Once again pre painting is recommended. Posts are generally not concreted in which allows the post to swell and contract.

Post Capitals

The Finishing touch to your Picket Fence is a post capital. These are available in Ball shaped, Windsor or a Pyramid. They are best glued and screwed on, Post capitals also protect the end grain of your post.

Rails

Once again H3 Treated Pine is the most common timber used, 90×35 and 70×35 are the sizes most builders choose for this job, generally supplied in 4.8m lengths for the 90×35 and 3.6m lengths for the 70×35. Recommended post spacing for the 90×35 is 2.4m max while the smaller 70×35 is recommended to span just 1.8m. Over spanning will cause your fence panel to sag.

Occasionally sticking to these openings can be difficult so a Newell post is sometimes required to help support the centre of the fence.
